AWS History and Timeline regarding AWS Trusted Advisor - Overview, Functions, Features, Summary of Updates, and Introduction

IAM Use, usage requirements such as availability with the Business and Enterprise plans, and the number of checks. In the AWS Support User Guide on October 7, 2026, the console screen that shows check results is called Trusted Advisor Recommendations, and the usage requirements for all checks are written with the names of the three plans announced on December 2, 2025. However, a single source does not tell you from which point in time the names, numbers, and usage requirements in your runbooks come. Furthermore, on October 1, 2026, the preview of AWS Well-Architected Agent was announced, and the announcement described the Well-Architected Agent as the next-gen evolution of Trusted Advisor and the AWS Well-Architected Tool.Trusted Advisor was initially released on January 30, 2012, as a feature for AWS Premium Support Gold and Platinum customers, offering eight initial checks. An article published on the AWS News Blog on the same day referred to this as beta testing. The AWS Trusted Advisor Dashboard was released on June 13, 2012, and on July 31, 2014, four checks were opened to all customers; in the same year, Trusted Advisor became available in the AWS Management Console. On November 18, 2016, it integrated with CloudWatch Events, and organizational view, which shows the accounts of an AWS Organizations organization together, was announced in What's New on November 17, 2020 (the User Guide's Document history has an entry for it on July 17, 2020). From December 20, 2021, through 2025, the results from AWS Well-Architected, AWS Security Hub, AWS Compute Optimizer, AWS Resilience Hub, AWS Config, and AWS Cost Optimization Hub were ingested as Trusted Advisor checks. In 2022, Trusted Advisor Priority was added, and on November 16, 2022, the Trusted Advisor Dashboard in the console was renamed to Trusted Advisor Recommendations. A new Trusted Advisor API was released on November 17, 2023, and from 2024 to 2026, checks continued to be deprecated.
This article presents a timeline that lists this history under the names used by the sources of each day. It aims to answer two questions. The first is from which point in time the check names, check counts, and usage requirements in your runbooks come, and what they correspond to in Trusted Advisor today. The second is what the Well-Architected Agent of October 1, 2026, is to Trusted Advisor, and what AWS sources say and do not say about it.
As far as the primary sources state explicitly, the answers are as follows. First, which plans can see which checks is written differently depending on the point in time and the source. In January 2012, Trusted Advisor was a feature for Gold and Platinum customers. On July 31, 2014, all customers gained access to four checks. The AWS Support User Guide, as of October 7, 2026, states that all checks are available to customers with Business Support+ (referred to as
AWS Business Support+ in the User Guide), Enterprise Support, and Unified Operations plans. In the same User Guide, the checks available to Basic Support plans are listed differently depending on the page.Next, regarding the Well-Architected Agent, the What's New announcement of October 1, 2026, describes it as
the next-gen evolution of AWS Trusted Advisor and the AWS Well-Architected Tool. The AWS Well-Architected User Guide states that AWS WA Agent ingests Trusted Advisor findings as baseline signals. No statement that announces a scheduled end for Trusted Advisor or that asks Trusted Advisor users to move to the Well-Architected Agent was found in the sources this article read. Of the 168 pages retrieved from the table of contents of the AWS Support User Guide on October 7, 2026, the name Well-Architected Agent appeared only on the page for signing up for Enterprise Support. It was not found on any of the 44 pages on which the name Trusted Advisor appears (including the change log and Document history). It was also not found on the Trusted Advisor product page, the AWS Support FAQ, or the Trusted Advisor API Reference.
This article holds only names, dates, order, where the checks come from, and which plan names the sources at each point in time wrote in the usage requirements of Trusted Advisor features. It does not address pricing or the amounts indicated by the checks. This article leaves the list of checks and their criteria to the check reference in the User Guide, and the steps for audits that use Trusted Advisor to AWS Well-Architected - Practical Self-Audit Checklist by Pillar.
Background and Method of Creating AWS Trusted Advisor Historical Timeline
This section first outlines the sources used to populate each entry in the timeline, explains how names and dates were determined, and describes the creation of the usage requirements table. All sources were accessed on October 7, 2026, except the Internet Archive copy of the AWS Support User Guide PDF, which was retrieved on October 8, 2026.Check Names and Usage Requirements That Remain in Runbooks
Reviewing the documentation related to AWS Trusted Advisor reveals three aspects that vary over time:- Screen Names: On June 13, 2012, a What's New announcement highlighted the launch of the
AWS Trusted Advisor Dashboard. On July 23, 2014, another What's New announcement stated that Trusted Advisor was now available in the AWS Management Console. On November 16, 2022, the AWS Support User Guide's change log stated,The Trusted Advisor Dashboard in the console is now Trusted Advisor Recommendations. - Number of Checks: A What's New announcement on January 30, 2012, reported 8 checks. An article on the AWS News Blog on March 3, 2013, mentioned 27. On July 23, 2014, a What's New announcement reported 37. The Trusted Advisor product page as of October 7, 2026, states
482, while the AWS Support User Guide's plan page statesMore than 500. - Usage Requirements: Sources from January 2012 mention Gold and Platinum plans. Sources from 2013 through 2020 list Business and Enterprise plans. On November 24, 2021, the Document history added Enterprise On-Ramp, and subsequent announcements sometimes mention it while others do not. The AWS Support User Guide as of October 7, 2026, lists the names of three plans announced on December 2, 2025.
For example, the page of the Trusted Advisor chapter of the AWS Support User Guide reads as follows on October 7, 2026.
AWS Trusted Advisor checks are available to customers with an AWS Business Support+, AWS
Enterprise Support, or AWS Unified Operations plan.
The same page, when discussing the Basic Support plan, reads:
If you have a Basic Support plan, you can use the Trusted Advisor console to access all
checks in the Service Limits category and selected checks in the Security and Fault
tolerance categories. Automatic check updates aren't available in the Basic Support plan.
On the same day, the same User Guide's check reference page lists two plans – Basic Support and Developer Support – and reads:
If you have a Basic Support or Developer Support plan, you can use the Trusted Advisor
console to access all checks in the Service limits category and the following checks in
the Security and Fault Tolerance categories:
In this way, sources of the same day sometimes write the usage requirements of the same feature with different plan names. This is why this article places the Plan Gate Table after the timeline.
The Primary Sources This Article Used, and What It Made into Entries
The entries in the timeline were drawn from the following primary sources:- What's New — A full-text search for announcements containing
Trusted Advisoryielded 73 results as of October 7, 2026. Of these, 43 announcements were tagged withwhats-new-v2#general-products#aws-trusted-advisor, with the oldest dating back to July 23, 2014. Announcements prior to that date were taken from the full-text search results. This article uses the "post date" (postDateTime) for announcements, rather than the year and month included in the URL. ⚠ For announcements up to July 31, 2014, the time in the publication date is a placeholder, so only the date is used. - AWS News Blog and AWS Cloud Operations Blog — The News Blog includes articles from January 30, 2012, March 3, 2013, November 12, 2013, July 31, 2014, August 17, 2022, and October 1, 2026. The Cloud Operations Blog includes an article from November 17, 2020.
- AWS Support User Guide — This includes the pages of the Trusted Advisor chapter, the Document history, and the change log. A total of 168 pages were retrieved from the table of contents, and the 44 pages on which the name Trusted Advisor appears were reviewed. ⚠ The dates in each entry of the Document history are located at the end of the entry. The change log records the addition and removal of checks, along with their corresponding dates. ⚠ The dates in some entries in the change log may differ between the anchor date and the main content. For example, the anchor of the October 30, 2023 entry is
new-trusted-advisor-checks-october-26. Some entries in the change log do not have dates in the main content. This article uses the dates from the main content. According to the Document history, the change log page was added on November 18, 2020. The oldest entry in the change log dates back to February 18, 2020. - Trusted Advisor API Reference and AWS Support API Reference — This includes information on usage requirements, a list of operations, and endpoint descriptions. No Document history page was found in the table of contents of the Trusted Advisor API Reference.
- AWS Well-Architected User Guide — This includes pages related to the Well-Architected Agent and release notes.
- Trusted Advisor Product Page and AWS Support FAQ — This uses the content as of October 7, 2026.
- Trusted Advisor models in AWS SDK for Python (botocore) — This uses the revision history and PyPI release dates to supplement the dates when API operations were added. ⚠ This refers to the date the operation was included in the SDK model, not the announcement date. For items with a date in What's New, this date was used only as a supplementary reference. For items without dates found in What's New or the User Guide (such as
ListRecommendationsForResourcefrom July 28, 2026), the date the operation was included in the SDK model is used.
The entries cover the names of Trusted Advisor screens and features, the sources of checks (including those imported from other services), which plans offer visibility into which checks, a mechanism for viewing organizational accounts collectively, two APIs, integration points with AWS Well-Architected, and events related to the deprecation of checks. Check additions were limited to those that added new check sources or categories, those that changed which plans can see a check, representative examples of checks that were later deprecated, announcements that gave the number of checks, the addition made on September 8, 2026, which is the closest to the verification date, and additions on which the sources disagree (such as the NAT gateway check of February 2026). Changes to screen names and locations were also documented. Specific additions of Trusted Advisor checks announced as individual service updates (for example, AWS Lambda on March 8, 2021, and Amazon Comprehend on September 30, 2021), announcements regarding AWS Systems Manager Explorer (May 4, 2020), announcements regarding the Trusted Advisor Explorer within AWS Solutions (May 7, 2020), minor changes to screen displays only, and announcements about pricing or amounts were not made into entries. Based on these criteria, 47 entries were selected. In other words, please note that the items on this timeline are not all updates to AWS Trusted Advisor, but are representative updates that I have picked out.
Names Are Taken from the Sources of That Day
The "Name on That Date" column in the timeline reflects the name used in the sources of that day. In this column, rows prior to November 16, 2022, do not use the term "Trusted Advisor Recommendations", and the 2016 row whose announcement says "CloudWatch Events" does not use "Amazon EventBridge". The "Name on the Verification Date" column clarifies the terminology used for the same item based on the verification date.⚠ AWS documentation itself sometimes applies new names to older records. For example, the January 29, 2021 entry in the Document history of the AWS Support User Guide states
Updated the Get started with Trusted Advisor Recommendations topic. as of October 7, 2026. The name "Trusted Advisor Recommendations" does not appear in the change log until November 16, 2022. The title of the January 18, 2022 entry in the same Document history reads, Added documentation for integrating with AWS Security Hub CSPM as of October 7, 2026. The January 19, 2022 What's New announcement, describing the same event, uses the term AWS Security Hub. The earliest What's New announcement that mentions Security Hub CSPM in a full-text search appears on June 17, 2025. In the PDF version of the User Guide created on 2025-12-02 (Internet Archive), the January 18, 2022 entry is titled Added documentation for integrating with AWS Security Hub.⚠ Older names remain in the documentation even after a new name appears. As of October 7, 2026, the check pages of the AWS Support User Guide have 161 notes about the API that excludes resources. Of these, 159 use the names of the plans announced on December 2, 2025. Two notes (regarding
AWS STS global endpoint usage across AWS Regions and Amazon S3 Incomplete Multipart Upload Abort Configuration checks) write For Business, Enterprise On-Ramp, or Enterprise Support customers. The AWS Well-Architected User Guide, on the page describing the integration of Trusted Advisor into the AWS Well-Architected Tool, states that it is for AWS Business and Enterprise Support customers. The AWS Support FAQ lists IAM Use (which was deprecated on May 15, 2024) as a check available to Basic Support customers. The Trusted Advisor chapter page still states, as of October 7, 2026, You also can use Amazon CloudWatch Events to monitor the status of Trusted Advisor checks. You cannot determine the document's publication date simply by looking at the names mentioned within it.Conflicting Dates and Statements for the Same Events
In some instances, there are multiple dates or different descriptions for the same event. This article presents the information as it appears in each source, without assuming that any one version is incorrect. The reasons for discrepancies in dates across different sources, and the rationale behind choosing specific dates for recording, are discussed in Where the AWS Primary Sources Disagree About Launch Dates.- Launch Year of Trusted Advisor: The What's New announcement from January 30, 2012, states
AWS Trusted Advisor launches with 8 checks, without using the term "beta". However, an AWS News Blog article from the same day writesThe following features are now in beta testing:. totaling 482 Trusted Advisor checks. The AWS Support User Guide's plan page states,More than 500 checks with AWS Trusted Advisor. - Checks Available with Basic Support and Usage Requirements: This is handled in the Plan Gate Table.
How to Read the Plan Gate Table
The Plan Gate Table lists, one row per source, which plan names each source writes as the usage requirements of a feature. This article's table is built with the same columns and rules as the Plan Gate Table of AWS History and Timeline regarding AWS Support Plans, with the two rules added by AWS History and Timeline regarding AWS Health and one more rule for the change log: a User Guide Document history entry uses the date of the entry as its As Of; from a sentence that mentions pricing, only the part without the pricing phrase is copied; and a change log entry uses the date in the body of the entry as its As Of. The columns are as follows:- What It Gates: The feature whose usage requirements the source states.
- Plans Named in the Source: The plan names the source writes, copied in the source's own spelling; spellings such as
a AWSare left as they are. Where the source states nothing, the cell saysThe source does not say. Before writing that, the entire source, including its pricing sections, is searched forplan,Support, available to,must have, andcustomersto confirm that no sentence says otherwise. From a sentence that mentions pricing, only the part without the pricing phrase is copied. - Where AWS Says So: The document containing this information.
- As Of: For What's New and the AWS News Blog, this indicates the publication date. For entries from the User Guide's Document history, this reflects the date of the entry. For change log entries, this reflects the date in the body of the entry. For the main body of the User Guide, API Reference, FAQ, and product page, this reflects the verification date (2026-10-07).
Each source gets its own row. Even when sources say different things, their rows are not merged into one. When a single source states the usage requirements for two or more features, some are split into one row per feature (the What's New announcement of 2014-07-31, the AWS Support FAQs, and the
trusted-advisor page of the User Guide), and others are kept in one row as a contrast between plan ranges (the What's New announcement of 2015-01-29, the AWS News Blog article of 2022-08-17, and the product page). The rows are chosen from the sources related to the timeline entries and from the main sources on the verification date, and they do not cover every usage requirements sentence the sources write. This article puts announcements, blog articles, and Document history and change log entries, whose As Of differs from row to row, into Table 1 (2012–2021) and Table 2 (2022–2026). Sources whose As Of is the verification date are split into Table 3 for the AWS Support User Guide and Table 4 for the other sources.Topics Covered in Other Articles

AWS Trusted Advisor Historical Timeline (Updates from January 30, 2012)
The following 11 tables constitute the main body of this historical timeline. Each table has the following columns. All references were obtained on October 7, 2026, except the Internet Archive copy of the AWS Support User Guide PDF, which was retrieved on October 8, 2026.- Date — For What's New announcements, this indicates the publication date. For the AWS News Blog and AWS Cloud Operations Blog, it indicates the article's publication date. For the User Guide, it indicates the date of the entry in the Document history. For the change log, it is the date in the body of the entry. For botocore, it indicates the release date on PyPI. If an event has a What's New announcement, its publication date is listed here, and the dates in other sources are given in the What Happened column. If an AWS News Blog article contains information not included in a What's New announcement, it is listed in a separate row.
- Name on That Date — This indicates the name the source used on that date. The source's spelling is reproduced verbatim. Some rows that cover several checks describe them in plain words instead of names, and rows that name nothing are marked with
—. - Name on the Verification Date — This indicates what that name represents in the sources verified on October 7, 2026, and its current status. A
—in this column means that there is no counterpart on the verification date, such as for a deprecated check, or that the row names nothing. - What Happened — This describes the event that occurred.

No check names are listed.

However, the 2014 announcement gives no check IDs, so this article does not go so far as to call either of them the same check as the 2014 one. The check reference on October 7, 2026, lists service-specific checks in the Service Limits category. The other two names (Security Groups - Specific Ports Unrestricted and MFA on Root Account) appear in the check reference list with a slightly different dash and capitalization (Security Groups – Specific Ports Unrestricted and MFA on root account). This article does not provide an answer to which checks are visible in your account.
