Overview - From Anthropic's Founding to Claude Opus 4.7
Anthropic was founded in 2021 as an AI safety company by former OpenAI researchers, and published the paper "Constitutional AI: Harmlessness from AI Feedback" in December 2022 introducing the training method that has since shaped every Claude model. The first publicly available Claude model arrived on March 14, 2023, when Anthropic launched the Anthropic API with Claude and Claude Instant.
Three years later, as of the time of writing, the Claude family covers three named size tiers - Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku - introduced together with Claude 3 in March 2024, with the current frontier being Claude Opus 4.7 announced on April 16, 2026.
Across these three years, Claude has been the first foundation model from a frontier lab to reach a 100K-token context window (May 2023), an early adopter of vision input across all model tiers (Claude 3, March 2024), the launch model for Computer Use as a public beta capability (Claude 3.5 Sonnet new, October 2024), and the introduction point for the extended-thinking and hybrid-reasoning paradigm in a production model (Claude 3.7 Sonnet, February 2025).
The 4.x generation that started in May 2025 brought a 1-million-token beta context window, the
effort parameter that lets developers trade off speed against capability, an explicit memory tool, and incremental coding gains that have made Claude Opus 4.x the default model for several AI-coding agent products. The scope of this article is limited to publicly announced models and capabilities documented at
anthropic.com/news/ and the official Claude API documentation. I do not include speculative future models. Pricing details change frequently and are deliberately omitted in favor of links to Anthropic's official pricing page. This timeline primarily references the following sources.

Claude Model Family Tree (Opus / Sonnet / Haiku)
Since the Claude 3 generation introduced in March 2024, the family has been organized into three named size tiers: Opus (maximum capability), Sonnet (balanced), and Haiku (low latency, low cost). The pre-3 generation (Claude 1, Claude Instant, Claude 2, Claude 2.1) predates this naming scheme; in retrospect, Claude 1 and Claude 2 sit on the Opus lineage and Claude Instant sits on the Haiku lineage.
The diagram below shows the full family tree from Claude 1 in 2023 through the 4.6/4.7 generation in early 2026.

The Sonnet lane covers the balanced tier introduced with Claude 3: Claude 3 Sonnet (March 2024), Claude 3.5 Sonnet (June 2024), Claude 3.5 Sonnet new / v2 (October 2024), Claude 3.7 Sonnet (February 2025), Claude Sonnet 4 (May 2025), Claude Sonnet 4.5 (September 2025), and Claude Sonnet 4.6 (February 2026).
The Haiku lane is the fastest and lowest-cost tier: Claude Instant (March 2023, retrospectively on the Haiku lineage), Claude 3 Haiku (March 2024), Claude 3.5 Haiku (October 2024 announce, November 2024 availability), and Claude Haiku 4.5 (October 2025). Note that Anthropic has not released Haiku versions corresponding to every Sonnet/Opus minor revision - Haiku 4.0 and Haiku 4.6 do not exist as of April 2026.

The content posted here is limited to major releases and capabilities considered essential for understanding the Claude family.
In other words, please note that the items on this timeline are not all updates from Anthropic, but are representative releases that I have picked out.

For the earliest Claude generations (1, 2, 2.1), Claude was only available through the Anthropic API or via early-partner programs. The first major external platform was Amazon Bedrock, which has carried Claude since the Bedrock general availability launch on 2023-09-28. Google Cloud Vertex AI began offering Claude models starting in early 2024. Microsoft Foundry is the most recent addition, first carrying Claude with the 4.5 generation in November 2025.
For the most current platform availability and exact regional rollouts, refer to Amazon Bedrock supported foundation models, Google Cloud Vertex AI Anthropic Claude models, and the Microsoft Foundry model catalog.
Deprecations and Model Lifecycle
Anthropic operates a four-stage model lifecycle: Active → Legacy → Deprecated → Retired. Once a model is marked Deprecated, Anthropic provides a recommended replacement and at least 60 days of notice before retirement. After the retirement date, API calls to that model identifier fail. The table below lists every Claude model deprecation announcement that has been published, drawn from the official Model deprecations page. The Recommended Replacement column reflects the currently recommended successor on Anthropic's deprecation page as of the time of writing. Anthropic updates this recommendation as newer models become available, so for older deprecation announcements the recommended replacement listed here is generally not the model that was suggested at the time of the original announcement.
* The table can be sorted by clicking on the column names.

Since the Claude 3 generation in March 2024, Anthropic has positioned the three tiers as follows. Claude Opus is the maximum-capability tier, used for the hardest reasoning, coding, and agentic tasks. Claude Sonnet is the balanced tier, used for production workloads where cost and latency matter alongside capability. Claude Haiku is the low-latency, low-cost tier, used for high-volume, simpler tasks. Capabilities such as extended thinking and Computer Use originally launched on Sonnet or Opus and have progressively moved down to Haiku - for example, Claude Haiku 4.5 was the first Haiku model with extended thinking and Computer Use.Is there a Claude Haiku 4.6 or Claude Haiku 4.7?
No. As of April 2026, the most recent Haiku model is Claude Haiku 4.5 from October 15, 2025. Anthropic has not released Haiku versions corresponding to every Sonnet or Opus minor revision.Summary
In this article, I built a historical timeline of Anthropic Claude foundation models from Claude 1 in March 2023 through Claude Opus 4.7 in April 2026, organized by the model family tree, the major release timeline, the evolution of capabilities, availability across cloud platforms, and the deprecation lifecycle. In three years, Claude has gone from a single proprietary chat model with a 9K-token context window to a three-tier family (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku) with 1-million-token beta context windows, native vision, tool use, Computer Use, extended thinking, server-side memory, and availability across the Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry. Each generation has consistently shipped at the same or lower price than the previous one, and capabilities that originally debuted on the Opus or Sonnet tier - such as Computer Use and extended thinking - have progressively become available on the Haiku tier as well.
I will continue to monitor how Anthropic's release cadence and capability roadmap evolve. The most reliable place to track new Claude model announcements is the official Anthropic News page, with model deprecations listed on the official Model deprecations page.
