This is a non-AWS installment in my history-and-timeline series, where I have previously tracked the evolution of individual AWS services and foundation model families. This time I have built a single, chronological reference for Microsoft Azure: how it began as "Windows Azure", how it grew from a platform-as-a-service into a full infrastructure and application cloud, how it was renamed and rebranded along the way, and how it entered its current AI era. Every row in the timeline links to a primary source - a Microsoft official blog post, news release, or documentation page.

The question "when did Azure ship X?" is asked constantly by developers, architects, and learners, yet the answer is usually scattered across a decade of separate Microsoft blogs whose URLs have moved more than once. This article organizes those platform-level milestones in one place, in ascending order, each with the Microsoft-official source that records it. If you follow my AWS and foundation-model timelines, this is intended as a multi-cloud companion rather than a comparison; it is a vendor-neutral record of what Microsoft shipped and when.

This article focuses on platform-level milestones - announcements, general-availability dates, renames, and infrastructure turning points. It is not a pricing guide, a market analysis, or an exhaustive catalog of every Azure service; it is a curated chronology of the changes that shaped the platform.

Background and Method of Creating the Microsoft Azure Timeline

The reason for creating this timeline is that Microsoft Azure has evolved over more than fifteen years, across many product names and organizational changes, and the primary facts are spread across a long trail of Microsoft blogs, news posts, and documentation - many of which have been renamed or relocated. It is genuinely difficult to keep a mental map of "when did Windows Azure become generally available?", "when exactly was it renamed to Microsoft Azure?", and "when did Azure OpenAI Service move from invitation-only to preview to general availability?". I wanted one page that organizes these facts chronologically, with a primary source for each one.

To organize this history, I have taken the following approaches.
  • Tracking the history of Microsoft Azure and organizing the transition of updates.
  • Summarizing the current overall picture of the Azure platform's major service families.
Azure has hundreds of services, and cataloging every one is neither possible nor useful. Instead, each row is a platform-level milestone, chosen by these inclusion criteria:
  • Platform turning points - the original announcement, commercial general availability, and major rebrands.
  • The first general availability of a service family that defines the platform (for example infrastructure VMs, App Service, Azure Functions, AKS, Cosmos DB, Synapse, Azure Arc, Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Fabric, and Azure AI Foundry).
  • Renames, because Azure's naming history is unusually significant (Windows Azure to Microsoft Azure; Azure Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID; Azure AI Studio to Azure AI Foundry to Microsoft Foundry).
  • Representative datacenter-geography and infrastructure milestones, including Microsoft's custom Azure silicon (Maia and Cobalt).
  • Announcements and general availability are recorded as separate rows when both are notable, so that "announced/preview" and "generally available" are never conflated.
This means the timeline deliberately omits routine service updates, SDK point releases, pricing changes, and market or share figures. It is a record of platform direction, not a changelog.

The source policy is primary-only. Dates come from Microsoft's own announcements and documentation, and secondary media are not used as the source of record. For the 2012-2013 period, several Windows Azure general-availability posts were published on Scott Guthrie's blog at weblogs.asp.net/scottgu; at the time, Scott Guthrie was the Corporate Vice President responsible for Windows Azure, and that blog was Microsoft's de facto official announcement channel before azure.microsoft.com/blog consolidated it, so those posts are cited as the primary record for that era. Where a Microsoft source states only a month, the timeline reflects that precision rather than inventing a specific day. This is a vendor-neutral record: it states what each release was, without ranking Azure against any other cloud.

There may be slight variations in the dates on this timeline due to differences between the original announcement, preview, and general availability, and due to product renames. The dates below prioritize the original announcement date when more than one exists.
The content posted here is limited to the milestones considered essential for understanding the history of Microsoft Azure.
